The star phases explained visually

 

Arising and Laying Hidden - the phase when a star, at a set calendar date, disappears totally from the night sky and then, at another set calendar date, reappears in the early dawn light, rising just before the Sun.

Curtailed Passage - the phase when, at a set calendar date, a star no longer appears to rise or set during the night but is visible in the night sky from sunset to sunrise. However, on another set calendar date, the star will appear to set just before dawn thus signifying the end of its period of curtailed passage.
